FX Matt Brewing Company
A little History
In 1888, German-born immigrant Francis Xavier Matt (or FX Matt, as he liked to be called), founded the Matt Brewing Company, only 10 years after first arriving in the United States. FX had been a brewing student of the Duke of Baden in Germany and was known as being “flamboyant, excitable and hard-working.” After Prohibition, FX was joined by Walter and Frank, his two sons. Walter Matt served as company president from 1951 until 1980 and is recognized as playing a pivotal role in the growth of the FX Matt Brewing Company. Frank, or FX Matt II, was president from 1980 to 1989. He was loved by many for devoting much of his time and energy to helping within the community.*

Today, the brewery is lead by third and fourth generation Matt’s: Nick and Fred. Nick is Chairman and CEO while Fred is President and COO of the brewery. Together they’ve made the decision to stay true to their German brewing heritage and remain one of the country’s most respected brewer’s of craft beer. They are proud to say, “In each bottle of Saranac, you’ll find a commitment to quality and patient attention to detail that is the signature of the Matt Brewing Company.”*
The FX Matt Brewing Company is the second oldest family-owned brewery in the United States. It is also the 7th largest craft brewery in the United States as well as the 13th largest overall brewery in the United States (based on 2010 beer sales volume – Brewer’s Association).
