History of the Żywiec Brewery
Żywiec beer has been brewed in the village of Żywiec, Poland for almost 150 years at the Żywiec Brewery. The Żywiec Brewery was founded in 1852, by Archduke Friedrich Habsburg in Żywiec, then part of Austria-Hungary. The Brewery launched export activities in 1913, and extended its distribution to other towns of the Austro-Hungarian Empire which included Budapest, Ostrava and Cieszyn. Żywiec beer spread all over the world when Polish residents traveled and immigrated to other countries and brought Żywiec beer along with them. It spread to such countries as France and Great Britain mostly due to WWII. The Brewery remained owned by the Habsburgs until it was confiscated by the post-WWII Communist government of Poland. In the early 1990’s a court case was started by the descendants of the original owners, who sued the Polish government demanding compensation for the nationalization and the use of the Habsburg family name and coat of arms for marketing purposes. In December 2005 the case was settled out of court on undisclosed terms. Also in the 1990’s the brewery was acquired by Heineken International and the Brewery was thoroughly modernized. It is currently considered to be one of the most modern breweries in the world. Grupa Zywiec S.A. consists of five main breweries: Żywiec Brewery, Elbrewery, Lezajsk, Warka Brewery and Cieszyn Brewery. The brewery has the capacity of producing 5 million hls a year, making it the largest brewery in Grupa Żywiec. Today Żywiec is by far the most popular beer in Poland, and has had good success in other countries and continents, and is quite popular in heavily Polish populated cities in the United States such as Chicago and Buffalo. Żywiec beer still has the original label which depicts a couple of Polish folk dancers. It is the most famous brand and the official trademark of the entire Brewery. There is no other beer in Poland brewed under the same label for half a century. Żywiec was the first Polish brand to be awarded the Brand To Watch title at British edition of Superbrands. Żywiecwas also two times awarded at the Polish edition of Superbrands event and is a Gold Medal winner at the 2007 World Beer Championships, the oldest international beer competition in America.

Żywiec
Żywiec is a Polish medium-light bodied pilsner beer that’s lightly hopped, with some light crispness in the middle, and a note of sweetness at the finish. Its aroma consists of clover, honey, hops and malt, and it pours with a pale yellow color and a good sized head. While drinking, the “mouth feel” is thin and lightly carbonated, crisp while medium-light bodied. Żywiec is still brewed according to the traditional recipes of the Zywies brewers, and is made with only the best grade of hops and malt, and is made as naturally as possible using Poland’s mountain spring water.
Żywiec is available year round.
Only available in bottles.
ABV: 5.6%
Pairs with: strong cheeses such as Oscypek (which is quite popular in Poland). Also goes well with sausage, like the classic polish traditional kielbasa.
