In the year of 725 Saint Corbinian with twelve companions founded a Benedictine Monastery on Nahrberg Hill, and founded the art of brewing at Weihenstephan. The first historical reference to hops at Weihenstephan was in the year 768 when there was a hop garden in the vicinity of the Weihenstephan Monastery, and the owner was obligated to pay a tithe of 10% to the monastery who brewed those hops. The Huns plundered and destroyed the Weihenstephan Monastery in 955, thus laying the cornerstone of a long-standing tradition that condemned the Benedictine monks to repeated reconstruction of their monastery. 1040 marked the birth of the Weihenstephan Monastery Brewery when Abbot Arnold succeeded in obtaining a license to brew and sell beer from the city of Freising, and brewing officially began at Weihenstephan. Between 1085 and 1463 the Weihenstephan Monastery burned down completely four times, and was destroyed or depopulated by three plagues, various famines and a great earthquake. Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian, then later the Swedes, the French in the Thirty Years War and then the Austrians in the war of the Spanish Succession all destroyed and plundered the Weihenstephan Monastery. However, each time the Benedictines with Bavarian tenacity rebuilt the monastery and brewery. With the rebuilding of their brewery they even succeeded in refining their brewing art. Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria issued the Bavarian Beer Purity Law in 1516, which stated that only barley, hops and water were to be used in Bavarian beer. He thus founded the world reputation of Bavarian and Weihenstephan beer. On March 24, 1803, in the course of secularization, all the possessions and rights of the monastery were transferred to the Bavarian state. However this did not shake the brewery and the drinkers of Weihenstephan continued to pursue their passion, however this time under the secular supervision of the royal holdings at Schleissheim. The Central Agricultural School along with its Bavarian brewing students moved from Schleissheim to Weihenstephan in 1852, and in 1895 the school became an academy. Then in 1930 the University for Agriculture and Brewing was incorporated in the Technical University of Munich. Thus Weihenstephan developed into the centre of world brewing technology. This did much for the outstanding reputation of the Bavarian State Brewery of Weihenstephan where students from all over the world are turned into the world’s best brewers. In 1921 the brewery got its name: Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan, and since 1923 has used the Great Seal of the Bavarian State as its corporate logo. The Bavarian State Brewery, which is the oldest brewery in the world, is today one of the most modern. The unique combination of tradition and state-of-the-art science explains the incomparable identity of the top-quality Weihenstephan beers. Hundreds of master brewers who have learned their craft at Weihenstephan act as ambassadors, spreading this knowledge throughout the world and thus contribute to the unique reputation of the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan.
