Sea Dog Brewing Company's History
The Sea Dog Brewing Company was founded on May 17th, 1993 by Pete Camplin in the historic shipbuilding town of Camden, Maine. The original location was a 240 seat brewpub and kegging brewery which overlooked the dramatic waterfall of the old Knox Woolen Mill.
Then on March 8th, 1995 Sea Dog opened their second facility. Located on the banks of the historic Penobscot River in downtown Bangor; this facility is a 540 seat restaurant and brewery.
Alan Pugsley and entrepreneur Fred Forsley became the new owners of Sea Dog in 2002, and along with their crew continue brewing a full line of handcrafted ale’s that capture the spirit of Maine’s sea-faring history. They also continue the tradition of serving great food in a great atmosphere in all three of their locations which feature full menus. The Sea Dog in Topsham occupies a scenic spot on the Androscoggin River. The Bangor location overlooks the historic Penobscot River. The South Portland location is near the Maine Mall.
Authenticity is very important to the Sea Dog Brewing Company, that’s why their beers are brewed in a traditional style using only the highest quality ingredients like imported English two-row malted barley and British top-fermenting yeast. Their English brewing style results in brews with a distinctive, refreshing taste and crisp finish unique to top-fermented beers.
Barney: a Great Pyrenees was Sea Dog Brewing Company's apprentice brewmaster and figurehead. Great Pyrenees were bred for their dauntless protection of mountain flocks and as official guard dogs for the French court in the 17th century, and Barney continued this tradition by posting guard over the brew kettle as it boiled. Although Great Pyrenees usually dislike the water Barney loved it and would dive-in whenever he got a chance. He also began sailing at three months, thus acquiring the nickname “Sea Dog”. Although he is no longer with us his spirit lives on through the Sea Dog Brewing Company.
