Czech Rebel's History
Before breweries every townsman used to prepare malt and beer themselves, and would sometimes sell it to innkeepers. However their were only a few houses in the town with complete equipment for brewing beer and malt production, so the brewers began to group and establish larger breweries. These breweries were better equipped and allowed the preparation of beer by those who held the right to brew beer.
After the fire of 1834, the brewmasters bought the Knightly Bukovsky House (today the brewery’s administrative building) where there was a small hand brewery. It was decided that the brewery should undertake its first large-scale reconstruction, after the capacity of the brewery ceased to meet the growing demands put on it. The reconstruction was completed on October 12, 1880, when the brewery was opened.
Since then the brewery has undergone a whole series of modernization and reconstruction, and has survived both times of war and socialism. After the Second World War the name of the town was changed to Havlickuv Brod. Havlickuv Brod the town and brewery are both named after the famous local Czech writer Karel Havlicek Borovsky.
The brewery has constantly raised production levels since the Second World War, and has won numerous awards. In 1995 the brewery once again returned to the hands of the descendants of the original owners.
Today the Havlickuv Brod Brewery is one of the last independent breweries, and Rebel beer is one of the most awarded beers in the Czech Republic.
