Merchant duVin's History

Merchant du Vin was founded in 1978 by Charles Finkel who had established for himself an enviable reputation in the wine trade, and had witnessed hundreds of thousands of Americans who had realized the rewards of fine wines during the 60’s and 70’s. He decided to create a company and put his theory to the test that their must be a similar audience for beers of distinction, as there is for fine wines. His idea with this company was that you should sell fine beer much in the same way as you sell fine wine, by educating the consumer to arouse curiosity as to the differences among these classic styles.

All Merchant du Vin beers are "authentic", meaning they come from a historical and regional brewing tradition. All the beer must be an outstanding representative of its style, and produced by a brewery of superb reputation. Merchant du Vin beers come from family or abbey owned breweries, and MdV sets the strictest standards for the beers that bear their importing label. As a result of these standards, Merchant du Vin’s benchmark breweries appear on nearly every list of the top beers in the world. Today Merchant du Vin has established a reputation as the Country’s leading importer of fine beers.

Faro is a Flemish classic which is common in pubs throughout Brussels, but is rare outside Belgium. Historically, sugar or sugar syrup was sometimes added to young, unblended lambic by a bartender which helped balance the lambic's tart acidity. Eventually lambic brewers began to bottle faro.

A considerable amount of trade with India was done during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The ships leaving the India Docks in London would sail around the Cape of Good Hope through the Indian Ocean to Bombay and beyond. This was a three-to four-month trip, and pale beers were highly hopped to withstand the trip. These beers became known as “IPA,” or India Pale Ale.

India Ale has a restrained maltiness and an emphasis on the aroma and flavor of hops from England’s finest vineyards.

Samuel Smith Organic Apricot Ale

Samuel Smith's Organic Fruit Beers are brewed and fermented at Melbourn Bros. Brewery in Stamford; then blended, conditioned and packaged at Samuel Smith's Old Brewery in Tadcaster; they are Certified Organic by the USDA-accredited UK Soil Association.

While there are older breweries in England, it would be safe to say that few are so little changed as this gem at Stamford, which has stood in the center of this beautifully preserved market community since 1825. From the antique grist mill to the ancient copper vessels, Melbourn Bros. remains today, a working brewery which blends the traditions of the ancient craft with that of the early industrial revolution. Closed in the 1970s, restoration with respect for the historical brewing equipment was begun by Samuel Smith's in the 1990s.

Before Samuel Smith's earned organic certification for Melbourn Bros. Brewery in 2008, Apricot Ale was their top-selling beer. The search to find Certified Organic apricots took some time, but Samuel Smith's Organic Apricot Ale was finally introduced to the US in February 2012.

Apricots contribute to a stunning fruit beer: the ripe, aromatic bouquet supports a sweet, summery flavor with just a suggestion of stone-fruit tartness. Samuel Smith's Organic Apricot Ale is rich and full-bodied; the color is a glowing hazy orange.

Organic Apricot Ale is available year round.

Only available in bottles.

ABV: 5.1%

Westmalle Dubbel

In the early days of Belgian Brewing, before universal literacy, two “x-marks” on a cask may have distinguished a “second beer style” made by a monastic brewery for outside sales, generally stronger than the original variety brewed for the monk’s consumption. Brewing historians think these marks may have been the root of two current beer styles: dubbels (doubles) and tripels (triples). Westmalle Dubbel was first brewed for consumption within the Abbey around 1836.

Westmalle Dubbel has a brown-amber color, and a subtle dark-malt aroma balanced by Belgian yeast character. It is deeply malty, with a subtle and dry finish that hints at tropical fruit. This is the classic Belgian Double, or in Flemish “Dubbel.” Westmalle Dubbel is also bottle-conditioned.
