History of McKenzie's Hard Cider
At the young age of nineteen Jacob Mayer was on his way to Allegheny County, PA where he was to join his brother James with the hopes of developing an apple orchard with the seeds they had brought from their orchard in England. However Jacob’s plans immediately changed when he met and fell in love with Elizabeth “Lizzy” McKenzie who was also coming to America from England. Lizzy was on her way to West Seneca, New York with her family, who had just purchased a Hotel and Tavern in the Hamlet of Ebenezer. After arriving in New York Jacob started planting his apple seeds and soon had established an abundant Apple Orchard producing bumper crops each and every year.
Jacob and Lizzy had a baby boy in 1812 who they named Jacob McKenzie Mayer or “J. Mack” as he was affectionately known. J. Mack spent his time with his dad in the Apple Orchards and with his mom at the tavern which her father, Old Man McKenzie owned. Old Man McKenzie loved his cider and would make batches to serve to his patrons all year long. J. Mack along with his grandfather would experiment adding different ingredients to their basic cider and people would come from all over to drink and take home gallons of this incredible juice.
J. Mack started his own Cider Mill in 1852; located in West Seneca, NY where he started producing ciders of his own. For five generations the special ciders that J. Mack and Grandpa McKenzie batched were considered their special brew and were only available to family and friends. Today the Mayer family has finally decided to share their ciders with others through McKenzie’s Hard Cider.
Now available to the public in New York and New England, McKenzie’s is quickly spreading throughout the Eastern US and beyond. All ciders are refreshing in taste, naturally gluten free and are 6% ABV. McKenzie’s Hard Cider comes in Original, Green Apple and Black Cherry. Mayer Brother’s fine beverages are the primary source for McKenzie’s Hard Cider.
Mayer Brother’s Apple & Water products is a family owned and operated business operating two processing and bottling facilities in the Buffalo/Niagara Falls, New York area. The Mayer family began pressing apple cider and grape juice at the present Buffalo plant in 1852, continuing today under the fifth generation ownership. In addition to twelve month production of fresh cider products, the Buffalo plant is the major area supplier of private label.
