Matt Brewing Company History
The Matt Brewing Company was founded in 1888 by German-born immigrant Francis Xavier Matt, or F.X. as he liked to be called. In 1885 F.X. left a promising career at the famous Duke of Baden Brewery in the Black Forest region of Germany and came to the United States with the dream of someday owning his own brewery. After several years of brewing experience at the Bierbaur Brewery, F.X. Matt re-organized the faltering brewery to create The West End Brewing Company in 1888, and served as both the star salesman and brewmaster. The brewery quickly became one of the largest and most successful of the 12 breweries operating in Utica at the time. After prohibition F.X. was joined by his sons Walter and Frank who are credited with increasing the breweries sales, and building renovations which included the model brewhouse and Tour Center. Walter Matt also served as the company’s president until 1980. Today the Matt Brewing Company is under the leadership of the third and fourth generations of the Matt family, Nick Matt (Chairman and CEO) and his nephew Fred (President and COO). The brewery has stayed true to its German heritage and still crafts beer to the exacting standards set forth over a century ago. In each bottle of Saranac beer, you'll find a commitment to quality and patient attention to detail that is the signature of the Matt Brewing Company which has earned them the reputation as one of the country's most respected brewers of specialty beers.
