History of the Brooklyn Brewery

In the 1800’s Brooklyn along with other cities with large German populations such as St. Louis and Milwaukee became America’s foremost brewing centers. This was due to their large German populations that brought with them a taste for good beer and the tradition of brewing beer by the Reinheitsgebot, the German purity law that since the 1500’s has legally forbidden the use of any ingredients other than hops, malted barley, wheat, yeast and water.

One hundred years ago there were no fewer than 48 breweries in Brooklyn, and taverns were community civic centers where important issues of the day were discussed and the Brewers themselves were civic and social leaders. Then in 1976 the last of the great brewing families, Schaefer and Liebmann (Rheingold) closed its doors. Unable to compete with the larger Midwest breweries that produced vast volumes of beer, and were able to advertise nationally through television and other media, the company finally closed its doors, and closed an era in Brooklyn’s brewing history. By this time the light pilsner beers made with corn and rice as well as malted barley, made by the larger Midwestern brewers had become more popular, and had little in common with the full-flavored robust lagers and ales brewed before prohibition.

In 1984 after his return from a six-year stint in the Middle East, Associated Press correspondent Steve Hindy, who had settled into Brooklyn’s Park Slope neighborhood, and had caught the homebrewing bug from diplomats stationed in Islamic Countries where alcoholic beverages were forbidden, decided along with Tom Potter a former lending officer at Chemical Bank to create The Brooklyn Brewery. Their initial goal with the company was to bring good beer back to New York City. With limited resources they had no other choice but to have their first beer, Brooklyn Lager contract brewed in Utica, New York. Hindy and Potter commissioned a fourth-generation German-American brewmaster, William M. Moeller to develop a recipe for Brooklyn Lager. Moeller’s grandfather had brewed beer in Brooklyn, and willed his notebooks and brewing records to his sons. For the label design and company identity, they hired the world renowned designer Milton Glaser, who is best known for the “I Love NY” logo.

However, it wasn’t immediate glory for Hindy and Potter in the first few years, as they found that most New York distributors were controlled by the big breweries that were uninterested in small local brands that had little marketing money. Their Brooklyn neighbor, Soho Natural Soda founder Sofia Collier advised them to distribute their own brands with their own trucks. So that’s exactly what they did. They bought a van and a small beverage truck, painted their logo on the side and began selling Brooklyn Lager store to store on their own. During this time crime was rampant in New York City and Hindy and Potter faced burglars, armed robbers and mob-connected characters who wanted a piece of the brewery. They also faced hard-boiled New York tavern owners who were skeptical of a full-flavored beer that cost as much as the leading imports and had no recognition or advertising in the market. With partners Mike Vitale, Ed Ravn, and Jim Munson Hindy and Potter struggled to establish the Brooklyn Brand in New York City.

In 1994 Hindy and Potter hired the highly respected New York brewmaster Garrett Oliver to design their planned Brooklyn plant and oversee production at the Utica facility. Oliver then developed a number of new Brooklyn beers including Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, Brooklyn East India Pale Ale, and Brooklyn Pennant Ale ’55, along with a long list of seasonal and special beers. His beers have won many national and international awards, and his book, The Brewmaster’s Table, has become a favorite among beer connoisseurs and food enthusiasts alike. On May 28, 1996, Mayor Rudy Giuliani cut the ribbon to open the new Brooklyn Brewery, and he poured the first official glasses of the first beer Brooklyner Weisse, a Bavarian style wheat beer.

In 2003 the partners decided they now had the volume to be a player in a big distributors house, and the company sold its distribution to two of the big New York City wholesalers who had spurned Tom and Steve 15 years before.

Today the company is working hard to expand Brooklyn’s presence in New York and beyond. In 2004 the company extended its U.S. distribution to South Carolina and Georgia which were the first expansions in a decade. In 2006 the company began selling beer in Michigan as well as shipping beer to Denmark, Sweden, and Finland as well as their existing export markets in Hong Kong, Japan and Great Britain. Brooklyn was picked-up by Try-It Distributing Co., Inc. in the summer of 2008, and has been an incredible addition to the Try-It portfolio.

The name “Brooklyn” is recognized all over the world, and slowly but surely, so is Brooklyn Brewery.

Brooklyn Brown Ale

Northern English Brown Ales tend to be strong and dry, while southern English Brown Ales are milder and sweeter. Brooklyn has taken the best part of each of these styles and added an American accent in the form of a firm hop character and roasty palate.

Brooklyn Brown Ale is full flavored yet retains a smoothness and easy drinkability that has made it one of the most popular dark beers in the Northeast. A blend of six malts, some of them roasted, give this beer its deep russet-brown color and complex malt flavor. It is fruity, smooth and rich, with a caramel, chocolate and coffee background. Generous late hopping brings forward a nice hop aroma to complete this picture. Brooklyn Brown Ale is an award-winning original American brown ale which was first brewed as a holiday special, and is now one of Brooklyn’s most popular year-round beers.

Brooklyn Dry Irish Stout

Brooklyn Dry Irish Stout

The Irish Stout beer style was once produced by dozens of  breweries in Ireland. These days it is only produced by three major breweries in Ireland, none of them Irish-owned, though several small breweries and brewpubs make stout as well. People are often surprised to hear that Irish stouts are among the lightest beers on draft, both in alcohol and in calories. These beers were originally designed as “session pints”, a term denoting beers that one can stick with for a long evening. These days, the major producers of Irish Stout dissolve nitrogen into the beer to produce the trademark head, a practice that started in 1960.

Brooklyn Dry Irish Stout is brewed the old-fashioned way, without the nitrogen addition. A large portion of the grain is roasted like coffee beans, developing the typical color and flavor of this beer. Aside from British pale malts, the beer includes caramel malts, black patent malt, unmalted black barley and a proportion of flaked raw barley, which helps the beer develop a beautiful, thick natural head. The famous East Kent Golding hop lends to the earthy aroma. The beer is neither filtered, nor fined and has a light, brisk carbonation. The blend of grains gives the beer an espresso-like bite, followed by coffee and chocolate flavors. At 4.2% ABV, this is lightest beer Brooklyn makes, and one of their favorites. Be sure to serve it with “two fingers” of foam, and enjoy the flavor of Brooklyn Dry Irish Stout. Slainte!

Brooklyn Dry Irish Stout is a seasonal beer and is only available from February - March.

Only available on draft.

ABV: 4.2%

Pairs with:Corned beef, cabbage and shepherd’s pie.

Brooklyn East India Pale Ale

Everyday English ales were spoiling during shipment from London around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope to Calcutta, so British brewer George Hodgson developed a way using extra malts and hops to create an ale; with bitterness and strength to endure the long sea voyage. This gave rise to a new style of beer, the East India Pale Ale.

Brooklyn’s East India Pale Ale is inspired by the original East India Pale Ales that were brewed in the 1800’s. A deep golden beer brewed from British malt, and a blend of hops featuring the choice East Kent Golding variety. It is traditionally dry-hopped for a bright aroma of hops, lemongrass, pine and citrus fruit. East India Pale Ale also has a robust bitterness, a warming malt palate and a clean hoppy finish.

Available in both bottles and cans.

Brooklyn Lager

Brooklyn was one of the largest brewing centers in the late 1800’s, and home to more than 45 breweries. Lager beers in the “Vienna” style was one of the local favorites, and Brooklyn’s award-winning Brooklyn Lager pays homage to this favorite.

Brooklyn Lager is amber-gold in color, and displays a firm malt center supported by a fine bitterness and floral hop aroma, with caramel malts that show in the finish. The aromatic qualities of the beer are enhanced by “dry-hopping”, the centuries old practice of steeping the beer with fresh hops as it undergoes a long, cold maturation. The result is a wonderfully flavorful beer, smooth refreshing and very versatile with food. Dry-hopping is largely a British technique, which Brooklyn uses in a Viennese-style beer to create an American original.

Available in both bottles and draft.

Gravity: 13.2oP

Brooklyn Pilsner

The pilsner style emerged from central Europe in the 1840’s, and became one of the world’s most popular styles of beer. Pilsner is also the style that was favored by New Yorkers and brewers pre-prohibition.

Like its ancestors, Brooklyn Pilsner is traditionally brewed from the finest European two-row barley malts. German-grown Perle and Hallertauer hops provide a crisp, snappy bitterness and fresh floral aroma. Brooklyn Pilsner is fermented at cool temperatures, and then it is given a long, gentle maturation (lagering), which results in a beer of superior complexity and smoothness.

Brooklyn brews Summer Ale from premium English barley malt, which gives this light-bodied golden beer a fresh bready flavor. German and American hops lend a light crisp bitterness and a citrus/floral aroma, resulting in a beer with a very sunny disposition.

Monster Ale

Brooklyn Monster Ale is a classic barley wine, a style of ale originally brewed by the butlers to the English and American Aristocracy.

Monster Ale is brewed from three mashes of heirloom British malt and spiced with aromatic American Willamette, Cascade and Fuggle hops. After four months of aging, it has a magnificent burnished copper color, an aroma redolent of sherry, citrusy hops and fruit, a soft, warming, complex palate, a spiritous finish, and a strength of 10.8%. It is vivacious when young, but will age gracefully for many years, becoming more complex over time.

Post Road Pumpkin Ale

Early American Colonialists seeking natural ingredients for brewing ales turned to pumpkins which were plentiful, flavorful and nutritious. Blended with barley malt pumpkins became a commonly used beer ingredient.

Brooklyn brings back the tasty tradition of brewing with pumpkin in Post Road Pumpkin Ale. Hundreds of pounds of pumpkins are blended into the mash of each batch, creating a beer with an orange amber color, warm pumpkin aroma, biscuity malt center, and crisp finish.

Sorachi Ace

Most Brooklyn beers are made with a blend of hop varietals. As a chef does with spices, Brooklyn looks to get the best qualities of each hop and create a harmony of flavors and aromas. However, a few years ago, Brooklyn’s brewmaster ran into a hop unique enough to deserve its own moment in the sun. A large Japanese brewery first developed the hop variety “Sorachi Ace” in 1988. A cross between the British “Brewer’s Gold” and the Czech “Saaz” varieties, it exhibited a quality that was unexpected – it smelled really lemony.

The unique flavor of Sorachi Ace was bypassed by the big brewers, but the Brooklyn Brewery thought it was pretty cool. So they made a special beer with it, and added the beer to their Brewmaster’s Reserve special draft beer program last year. Most Brewmaster’s Reserve beers are only available for a short time, and then they’re gone. But they liked this one so much, they decided to bring it back and give it the star treatment. Brooklyn Sorachi Ace is a classic saison, a cracklingly dry, hoppy unfiltered golden farmhouse ale, but made entirely with now-rare Sorachi Ace hops grown by a single farm in Oregon. They ferment it with their special Belgian ale strain, and then add more Sorachi Ace hops post-fermentation. After the dry-hopping, the beer emerges with a bright spicy lemongrass / lemon zest aroma backed by a wonderfully clean malt flavor.

It tastes like sunshine in a glass, and that suits us just fine, especially with seafood dishes and fresh cheeses. It’s just the thing on nice summer days and beyond.

Sorachi Ace is available year round.

Only available on draft.

ABV: 7.6%
Gravity: 15.7oP

Pairs with: Pork buns, fish tacos, shrimp, smoked salmon, sushi, prosciutto, curries, salads, grilled meats and fresh goat cheese.
